THE HISTORIC BOERNE HIGH SCHOOL WALL WILL NOW HAVE TO COME DOWN

Back in July, we shared the news that Boerne ISD had found a way to save the longtime BHS landmark at Blanco and Esser roads. After a huge response from the community asking that it be preserved, the district announced plans to stabilize and repair the wall rather than replace it.

Unfortunately, that plan isn't going to work.

Boerne ISD says Waterman Construction has been working to determine how to reinforce the wall, but crews discovered it does not have a substantial foundation. When attempts were made to reinforce it, the wall began to crack.

The district then consulted a structural engineer, who determined that leaving the wall in its current condition posed a significant safety risk.

As a result, Boerne ISD says the wall will now be carefully dismantled.

There is some good news here. The district plans to salvage as many of the original bricks and materials as possible and incorporate them into a new piece honoring the landmark's history and the generations of Greyhounds who remember it.

The wall was built by students in the late 1980s and has stood at the corner of Blanco and Esser since 1987. Earlier this year, community feedback overwhelmingly favored preserving it if possible.

It's definitely not the ending everyone celebrated back in July, but it sounds like a piece of the original landmark will live on in whatever comes next.

A new Christmas shopping spot is quietly taking shape behind the Main Street shops. The Christmas Shoppe is turning a tucked-away stone warehouse into a dedicated showroom filled with artificial Christmas trees.
